Wumulukuk
Wumulukuk is a 35-minute community-made fiction film created by Warruwi Community (Arnhem Land),
directed by Elizabeth Langslow and produced by Mawng Ngaralk.
The film uses infrared technology, ancestral memory, and cross-generational collaboration
to explore knowledge of plants, medicine and Macassan trader history in the dry sixth season.
Spoken in Mawng, Yolŋu Matha, and Kunwinjku, the film tells a story of treasure from
Macassan traders mysteriously washing ashore at Warruwi community. Plant knowledge is
also passed on by Elders and ancestors to the kids, alongside the help of
an infrared helmet from the Rangers. ‘Wumulukuk’ weaves together
language, traditional plant knowledge, environmental science,
and speculative fiction in a culturally
grounded, community-directed production.
