Mak

Mak is a 20-minute community-made fiction film created by Warruwi Community (Arnhem Land), directed by Elizabeth Langslow and produced by Mawng Ngaralk.

Young people in Warruwi find strange messages around the community. Their mission is to find out the meaning of the messages and keep their culture strong.

Message stick

Spoken in Mawng, Yolŋu Matha, and Kunwinjku, the film tells a story of messages appearing around the island. The messages are made with pictures not words.

The Nowhere Girls, alongside some of their friends set about trying to decode what the messages mean.

With the help of their Elders, they soon get to the bottom of the symbols, connecting them to Mak or message sticks used by their ancestors to get news around the community.
